Brushstrokes of City Life

NEW FOR SS25 | METROPOLITAN COLLECTION

Swirls and energetic mark-making take centre stage in the SS25 fabric and wallpaper collection, Metropolitan. Evoking the feeling of a city in movement – the frenetic pace, rhythm, and atmosphere that defy easy description. To translate this essence into designs, the design team drew inspiration from the work of 20th-century abstract painters, who captured modernity in their own unique ways.

The fabric collection itself nods to some renowned 20th-century artists, such as the Russian avant-garde painter Kazimir Malevich and the Cuban-American minimalist Carmen Herrera. You might even spot a few others referenced in the collection.

Herrera was celebrated for her crisp lines, playful chromatic contrasts, and pared-back palettes. Malevich, a pioneer of abstract art, sought to distance his work from representational forms, aiming instead to capture the idea of pure feeling.

Inspired by these artists, our designers created large, loose, and dramatic brushstrokes to convey a sense of motion. This is particularly evident in the Dynamic wallcovering, where fast, visible brush marks and upward-curving lines suggest speed and energy.

This type of linework also draws from the 20th-century art movement Cubism, which delved into the nature of perception. The angular shapes and layered forms reflect multiple perspectives of a single subject, further enhancing the dynamic feel of the collection.
